How do you test an outboard motor out of the water?
Just bought a bass boat with a 50hp outboard. Would like to test it out of the water. The boat came with what looks like a pair of ear muffs that have a water hose attachment. Apparently I can hook up a garden hose to this thing to test the motor out of the water. Anybody know how to do this??? thanks!

u can run an outboard motor for a short time or u can find a 55 gallon drum with the top out an place motor in the barrel
OUTBOARD MOTOR / SMALL BOAT USE:

the engine is cooled by the water from the lake that your riding on.
the garden hose cools the engine when its out of the water
Go to the local boat store or I even believe wal mart has them in the boat/life jacket isle.
It looks like a big pair of flat rubber ear muffs. A garden hose contects to it and then you clamp it to the engine at the water intake hole to cool the engine. It then will pump the water through as if you are in the lake.
Buddy and I did this for 2 of his boats. Works great.
Clamp a 2by6 to the inside of a 55 gallon drum. It works great!!
use the ear muffs on the lower unit water intakes turn water to fullblast crank engine if newer engine will pea a stream out back of engine but only if water pump is working
Do not start the motor without water going to the drive.
If the ear muffs have water feeds on both sides put the on the drive.
If water only comes out 1 side put tape on the other side of drive-this helps the engine get more water. A heavy hose works best because vacuum from the drive will collapse a small cheap one
Turn water on and start engine.
DO NOT REV THE ENGINE VERY HIGH- THIS WILL COLLAPSE ANY HOSE AND BURN OUT THE PUMP.
Hi it is for starting it just put your water to it and put it on the motor you shood see next to the botom on both sides some slis thats where you put it over them start the water then your motor ok, you shood see the water comeing out at the top of the moter after you have started it
Yes you may be able to hook up a garden hose, but the best way is to get a 55 gallon drum and fill it with water for the motor to run in.
