Sailing ships are one of the things that bring out the child in all of us. They are so big and majestic looking that we are instantly taken back to another place in time. Most of us, when we look at a sailing ship, loose ourselves in daydreams about what it would be like to sail away in one, floating across the softly rolling waves and drifting into the sunset. The difference between a cruise and a sailing vacation is that on a cruise you float around in a giant luxury hotel that floats. On a sailing vacation you can sail away on a replica of the tall ships of yesteryear. Just like a traditional cruise sailing vacations offer a variety of packages that differ in length, location, and hands on experience.

Sail away on a sailing vacation and you won’t have to worry about dealing with the large number of people you find packed onto a cruise ship, sailing ships are smaller and there is seldom more then twenty guests on the sailing ship during each vacation. If you don’t feel up to spending your entire vacation time sailing away across the ocean view, you can find sailing cruises available on the Great Lakes where the sailing ship only goes out for a few hours before returning to land.

If you don’t feel that you can get an accurate feel for how it really feels to sail away on a sailing ship on a sailing vacation, you might want to consider signing on as a permanent crew member aboard a sailing ship. There are always sailing companies looking to take on a crew of eager people who want to learn what it was really like to sail away on one of the magnificent ships.

Although most sailing companies are looking for crew member between 18 and 25 years old, don’t feel that you have missed an opportunity because you are older, the ship owners’ love having a more mature perspective onboard. Becoming a crew member aboard a sailing ship gives you an opportunity to compete in sailing ship races, learn how to navigate, climb rigging, and you’ll bond with other crew members who share your love of sailing away.
